The goal of the Gradual Release of Responsibility is for teachers to strategically transfer the responsibility in the learning process from the teacher to the students. Typically, the model of teaching has phases: I DO- where the teacher models the lesson objective in a focus lesson, WE DO- guided instruction with both input from the teacher and the students, YOU DO TOGETHER: Collaborative learning in small groups or partners and YOU DO ALONE- independent practice.
Project Based Inquiry-Global
I was able to practice the gradual release model in a Project Based Inquiry-Global (PBI-G) study with my kindergarten students. Through this process I was able to scaffold readings, and support students who struggled with literacy foundation skills, while providing enrichment for others. All students, no matter their academic ability were successful in completing the PBI-G.
Close Reading
Below is a video of an example of a close reading structured for lower elementary age students. This strategy can be differentiated to best fit the needs of the students in a class. For students who are struggling, you may support them though a think-aloud, reading the text to the students and modeling your thinking as you answer a Text Dependent Question. As students become more proficient in reading, discussing, and analyzing text, you may gradually release the responsibility for reading & thinking to them. The idea is to offer just the right amount of support so that students can be successful.
